Karel Martens: Tokyo Papers
A collection of 41 monoprints created by Dutch graphic designer and typographer Karel Martens between 2019 and 2020. The project began in 2018 when Martens received a package from artist-curator Pierre Leguillon, containing filled-in Japanese forms discovered at a street market in Tokyo. Intrigued by the delicate, thin paper with a rectangular black-blue carbon layer on the back, Martens began printing on these surfaces in 2019. However, as overprinting on the carbon layer caused unintended damage, he shifted to working on the front sides as well.
